AI Month-End Close Tools: FloQast, BlackLine, Numeric

By the AI Tools for Accounting team ·

The short answer

AI month-end close tools now do more than track a checklist. FloQast, BlackLine and Numeric each sell AI that matches transactions, prepares reconciliations or journal entries and flags anomalies, while newer tools such as Kinter and Meridian (Pilot) pitch AI agents that do much of the close work itself [1][4][6][9][11]. Every vendor covered here keeps a person approving entries or reviewing the books before anything is final. For accountants, controllers and CPA firms, the bigger split is who the tool is built for: FloQast, BlackLine, Numeric and Kinter target in-house accounting teams, while Meridian is built for accounting firms closing many client books [12].

What changed this fall

  • September 16, 2026: FloQast announced Transform, which builds AI agents from files of a close the team already finished, plus an AI Assistant that reviews journal entries before a person approves them, Detect for transaction anomalies, and a coming COSO GenAI governance module [2].
  • October 6, 2026: Pilot added a Month-End Close Dashboard to Meridian, showing every client's close stage, blockers and owners, with closes that can start automatically once a client's data arrives [13].
  • October 15, 2026: Numeric launched an MCP (Model Context Protocol) server that lets Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini and other AI models work with a team's Numeric workspace, including creating or editing close tasks [8].
  • October 20, 2026: BlackLine published a CFO checklist for what it calls the agentic close, where human teams govern specialized AI agents across multi-ERP environments [5].
  • October 26, 2026: FloQast announced an expanded partnership with PwC UK to provide tech-powered finance managed services [3].

What each tool does

  • FloQast sells two close packages. Close Management covers the close checklist, account reconciliations, accounting operations, projects and an AI assistant; Close AI adds AI agents, AI matching including three-way matching, automated amortization, depreciation and subledger reconciliations, automatic journal entry posting and variance explanations [1]. FloQast says more than 3,500 accounting teams use it [2].
  • BlackLine markets an agentic financial operations platform for record-to-report: agents execute reconciliations with intelligent transaction matching, validate journals before they post, consolidate data across entities and flag anomalies with an audit trail [4]. BlackLine describes itself as ERP-agnostic and able to connect multiple ERPs at once [7].
  • Numeric offers Close Management and Analytics (close project management, live ERP integrations, auto-reconciliations, flux analysis and review notes), Cash Management, Billing and Revenue, and a full ERP replacement for NetSuite [6]. Numeric says it was founded helping NetSuite, QuickBooks Online, Xero and Sage Intacct customers, and that teams can buy single products on top of their current ERP [6].
  • Kinter sells AI accountants for in-house teams on NetSuite or QuickBooks. They prepare accruals and prepaid schedules, automate payroll entries, reconcile accounts and draft journal entries with supporting detail and approval routing [9][14].
  • Meridian (Pilot) is built for accounting firms. Its Close Agent runs each client's close checklist (categorization, reconciliation against bank and card statements and exception handling) and returns review-ready books with flux analysis and workpapers [11][12]. Pilot says it is fully integrated with QuickBooks Online today, with more ledgers coming [13].

Who approves the AI's work

  • FloQast: its AI Assistant reviews a submitted journal entry, flags errors, scores audit risk and recommends a fix, and FloQast says "the human makes every call" [2]. Transform agents are signed off step by step by the accounting team before they go live [2].
  • BlackLine: says its agents validate journals before posting and keep full, reviewable audit trails [4].
  • Numeric: its in-app AI, Prism, surfaces daily agent items that need review [6].
  • Kinter: says nothing posts to the general ledger without explicit human approval [10].
  • Meridian: logs every decision for review, and the firm's accountants approve the books it hands back [11][12].

Published pricing

  • FloQast: custom packages with no per-user fees; no prices are listed on the pricing page [1].
  • BlackLine: we did not find published pricing on BlackLine's site.
  • Numeric: quote-based; Numeric says it weighs factors from number of transactions to number of seats, and scopes onboarding and data migration upfront [6].
  • Kinter: pricing not published, contact vendor [9].
  • Meridian (Pilot): priced per client by complexity; Pilot says most firms land between $75 and $250 per client, with the exact figure confirmed by Pilot [16].

Vendor claims to check in a demo

These are vendor numbers, not independent tests. BlackLine says close cycles can shrink by up to 70% and claims up to 99% matching accuracy [4]. Numeric says its cash management matches up to 95% of bank transactions automatically [6], and Kinter says its agent matches about 95% of transactions, with exceptions in one queue [15]. Ask each vendor to run a recent month of your own data and show which items still landed in the exception queue.

How to choose

  • Start with who closes the books. An in-house team on NetSuite, Sage Intacct or a multi-ERP stack should compare FloQast, BlackLine, Numeric and Kinter. A CPA firm or bookkeeping practice closing many QuickBooks Online clients is Meridian's stated audience [12].
  • Match the ERP. Kinter lists NetSuite and QuickBooks [9], Meridian lists QuickBooks Online [13], and BlackLine stresses multi-ERP connections [7]. Check the integrations page for your exact ledger.
  • Decide how much the AI may post. FloQast's Close AI can post journal entries automatically [1], while Kinter requires approval before anything posts [10]. Settle your approval rules before the demo.
  • Ask about governance for audits. FloQast is building COSO GenAI governance into its platform [2], and BlackLine stresses reviewable audit trails [4]. Ask your auditor what evidence they expect for AI-prepared work.
  • Consider AI assistants you already use. Numeric's MCP server connects outside models to your close workspace [8]. See which accounting tools work with Claude and ChatGPT via MCP.

FAQ

Can AI close the books without an accountant? None of the five vendors here describe that. FloQast says the human makes every call on AI journal entry review [2], Kinter requires approval before posting [10], and Meridian hands back books for the firm's accountants to approve [12].

Which AI close tool is built for accounting firms with many clients? Of the tools covered here, Meridian (Pilot) is the one built for firms, with a dashboard showing every client's close in one view [13]. The others target in-house accounting teams.

Do FloQast, BlackLine or Numeric publish prices? No. FloQast quotes custom packages with no per-user fees [1], Numeric quotes based on transactions, seats and other factors [6], and we did not find published BlackLine pricing. Meridian publishes a typical range of $75 to $250 per client [16].
